Are You Storing Your Leather or Suede Jackets in a Plastic Garment Bag?

Posted on January 21, 2016 by Maria Kazzi

(Updated 14.9.17)

Throughout the years you've made a significant investment in your winter wardrobe and perhaps one-off pieces such as that sassy red leather jacket or that classic royal blue suede jacket.

So it makes sense that you would want to safely protect and store your favourite leather and suede jackets and coats, Right?

But have you ever stopped to think about the damage that could be caused if you are using plastic, PEVA or non-woven garment bags to store your leather or suede pieces? Or what irreparable damage can eventuate when using these less than favourable garments?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN STORING YOUR LEATHER OR SUEDE PIECES...

                              Leather-jackets-on-rack-dressy

Due to their delicate fibres; leathers and suedes need extra protection against the elements such as dirt, dust particles, sunlight, mould and moisture build-up - especially in areas where humidity and moisture is a problem.

Most importantly the type of garment bag you choose to store your leather and suede pieces in, can be the difference of 1 year to 20+ years of wearability.

Here's Why..

Plastic Bags and Non-Woven Fabrics Are a No-Go!

Plastic-garment-coverWe Repeat: Say NO to plastic and non-woven bags! Generally, these arePlastic-garment-bags the most common types of garment bags and they’re cheap, and manufactured from plastic (PEVA – commonly used in shower curtains) or non-woven fabrics (supermarket bags).

It is important that you completely avoid these types of garment bags as they can cause green-non-woven-supermarket-bagserious, irreversible damage, particularly if stored in sunlight, humid or moisture-filled wardrobes. This includes the build up of mould spots and mildew - particularly to your suede and leather jackets - because of air cannot comfortably circulate in and around your stored jacket or leathers.

Fading and discolouration (yellowing) is also a problem with these types of plastic and non-woven bags as humidity builds up and potentially dries out the natural fibres of your leathers and suede pieces. This also includes cotton, wedding gowns, embellished pieces and other delicate fabrics, as again, no air can comfortably circulate in and around your garments, particularly if stored from season to season, or worse, for long periods of time.

Plastic doesn't breathe!

In fact, these plastic-type garment bags almost suffocate the natural fibres of your leathers and suedes causing potential deterioration of not only the stored garment but the bag itself, as it has a tendency to crumble and falter over time.

If it gets this far, it can be almost impossible to remove the crumbled fragments of the non-woven or plastic bag from your wardrobe, your jackets and coats and the garment can be deemed irreparable - depending how soon you spotted the damage.

This actually happened to my leather jacket when it was stored in a non-woven garment bag for less than 2-3 years, the fragments of the non-woven bag crumbled everywhere and it served absolutely no purpose in protecting my jacket!

Dry Cleaning Plastic Bags

Dry-cleaning-plastic-bagPlastic dry cleaning bags should NEVER be used to store your wears. The only purpose of these bags is to transport your dry cleaned clothes from the shop to your home safely. Discolouration can be caused by BHT (butylated hydroxyltolune) an anti-oxidant found in these plastic bags. If you are storing your leather or suede pieces in these plastic bags, they do not allow air to circulate through nor do the garments breathe properly which can lead to further mould build-up, mould spots or they will eventually cause your garments to discolour or fade when stored for long periods of time.

TIP: Every 6-12 months take out your garments, coats and jackets and simply air them out in the fresh air for 1 to 2 days - especially if you don't wear them all that often. They will love you for it! And it will prolong the integrity of the leather and suede fibres and your garments longevity.

100% Cotton Garment Bags are an Absolute

It is refreshing to know that cotton is a natural fibre and has many attributes when it comes to safely storing and protecting your garments for the short and long term. It is a lightweight fabric, breathable, acid-free, hygienic and incredibly strong. It is also a low maintenance fabric which makes it easy to wash and is reasonably quick to dry.

TIP: For extra care when storing your leather or suede garments - do not fold - as it will cause unnecessary creases and further damage the delicate material. Only fold your jackets and coats when travelling or for short-term storage purposes.

Remember it is important to ensure that your wardrobe or storage space has natural air flow and ventilation. If not, a ceiling fan or isolating fan can be used to dry out any moisture particles and avoid mould build-up (do this about every 6 months) or when possible. Your clothes will love you for it!

Invest in a quality wooden coat hanger

wooden-coathangerYour garments should always be hung on a well-made wooden quality hanger. Ensure that the shoulder and the arch of the coat hanger supports and maintains the shape of your jackets or item of clothing you wish to preserve. Also, never leave your garments on the wired coat hanger as it lacks support and can sometimes tarnish the garment if left in a humid area with little air flow, and for extended periods of time. Your leathers and suede garments are best stored in a space where air flow is sufficient and can circulate comfortably - this is imperative for both short and long term purposes.

Clean Your Leather and Suede Jackets Periodically

Firstly, always read and follow the manufactures care instructions – they know best. Depending on how frequently you use your leather or suede jacket, every now and again remember to take it to a specialised dry cleaner. They have the necessary equipment, professional tools and conditioners required to keep the leather flexible and glowing all year around.

In the interim, if you live in a dry or humid area, source the appropriate conditioners and apply as necessary per instructions. If you live in wet areas, make sure you find suitable products designed for waterproofing and conditioning your leather or suedes. Doing this will extend the life of your leathers and suedes so that you can enjoy them for many more years to come.

Quick Tips:

  • Store your leather pants or jackets in the freezer overnight, it works! Wrap in a plastic bag first. It doesn’t kill any bacteria or remove any stains or odours but it does refresh them
  • Spot clean your leathers with a cotton white cloth
  • Never rub your leathers as it could cause colour fade
  • Test a small area of your jacket first with a conditioner or a waterproof cream or oil, before applying in full
  • If the leather is wet, let it dry our naturally or place a dry towel underneath to absorb the moisture
  • Avoid direct heat, sunlight, humidity, moisture where possible
  • Ensure airflow and ventilation is sufficient to avoid mould and mildew
  • Keep your garments in a 100% cotton Kazzi Kovers

Follow these simple tips and you’ll get the most out of your leather, suede and wool jackets and coats. Enjoy!
