Are You Storing Your Leather or Suede Jackets in a Plastic Garment Bag?

Posted on January 21, 2016 by Maria Kazzi

(Updated 9.2.18)

Throughout the years you've made a significant investment in your winter wardrobe and perhaps one-off pieces such as that sassy red leather jacket or that classic royal blue suede jacket.

So it makes sense that you would want to safely protect and store your favourite leather and suede jackets and coats, Right?

If you are storing your garments in plastic, PEVA or non-woven garments bags, have you ever stopped to think about the damage that could be caused to your leather or suede jackets and coats, or what irreparable damage can eventuate when using these less than favourable garment bags?

Due to their delicate fibres; leathers and suedes need extra protection against the elements such as dirt, dust particles, sunlight, mould and moisture build-up - especially in areas where humidity and moisture is a problem.

Most importantly the type of garment bag you choose to store your leather and suede pieces in, can be the difference of 1 year to 20+ years of wearability.

Here's Why..

Plastic Bags and Non-Woven Fabrics Are an Absolute No-Go!

Plastic-garment-coverWe Repeat: Say NO to plastic and non-woven bags! Generally, these are the most common types of garment bags and they’re cheap and manufactured from plastic (PEVA – commonly used in shower curtains). Do not store your leather jackets or coats in any type of plastic garment bag, because the leather or suede fabric will potentially dry out and diminish the leathers' integrity and shape over time (No one wants that!.)

Non-woven garment bags (similar to the green shopping bags found at supermarkets) have a green-non-woven-supermarket-bagsimilar effect as plastic garment bags. It is important that you completely avoid both of these types of garment bags as they can cause serious, irreversible damage; such as fading and discolouration (yellowing) of your leathers, suedes, leather deterioration and more.

Avoid Storing Your Leather or Suede in Sunlight

Mould on jacketIf your garments are stored in sunlight (direct or indirect), or humid or moisture-filled wardrobes with little to no air circulation, this can also fast track and create mould spots on your leather and suede jackets due to the excess humidity and the lack of air circulation in your wardrobe or stored space.

These cheap and nasty garment bags also have a tendency to crumble and falter over time, which is of no service in protecting and prolonging the longevity of your beloved leather garments.

If it gets this far, removing the crumbled fragments of the non-woven or plastic Non-woven bagsbag from your wardrobe floor - depending on how soon you spot the damage - can be one of the most annoying, time consuming exercises to clean it up (I know because this happened to me!) - it gets into every crevice, every space and you're still finding fragments months later (funny, not funny!). You also want to hope the fragments don't melt, imprint or disfigure the leather in hot, humid conditions due to the plastic material base. Plastic melts.

In fact, these plastic and non-woven type garment bags are adversely suffocating the natural fibres of your leathers and suedes causing the potential deterioration of your stored jackets or coats, when stored long term. These unfavourable and cheap garment bags will definitely increase the probability of irreparable damage caused to your leather and suede garments and the repair bill can be costly to remove the mould between AUD$65 - $250+ - depending on the severity of the mould damage.

"This actually happened to my blue suede jacket when it was stored in a non-woven garment bag for less than 2 years. Not only were there fragments strewn all over the floor of my wardrobe but the non-woven bag served absolutely no purpose in protecting my leather jacket both in the short and long term. Mould spores had also developed, as no air could comfortably circulate in and around my leather jacket, which resulted in a lengthy and costly process to have professionally removed."

Instead, by storing your garments in a natural fibre such as 100% cotton garment covers, it is guaranteed to safeguard your garments and maintain fabric integrity. Cotton also has many fabulous attributes that preserves the longevity of your garments' for the short and particularly long term storage (more on this below).

Dry Cleaning Plastic Bags

Dry-cleaning-plastic-bagSure we have our cherished and everyday garments dry cleaned, but did you know that these plastic dry cleaning bags should NEVER be used to store your wears? The only purpose of these bags is to transport your freshly dry cleaned clothes from the shop to your home safely. Discolouration can be caused by BHT (butylated hydroxyltolune) an anti-oxidant found in these plastic bags.

If you are storing your leather or suede pieces in these plastic bags, they do not allow air to circulate through nor does it allow the leather to breathe. This can lead to further mould build-up and mould spots, or they will eventually cause your leather or discolour or fade when stored for long periods of time.

TIP: Every 6-12 months take out your garments, coats and jackets and simply air them out in the fresh air for 1 to 2 days - especially if you don't wear them all that often. They will love you for it! And it will prolong the integrity of the leather and suede fibres and promote garment longevity.

Why we LOVE Cotton!

100% cotton garment covers are an ABSOULUTE!

It is refreshing to know that cotton is a natural fibre and has many attributes when it comes to safely storing and protecting your garments for the short and long term. TIP: For extra care when storing your leather or suede garments - do not fold - as it will cause unnecessary creases and further damage the delicate material. Only fold your jackets and coats when travelling or for short-term storage purposes.

Clean Your Leather and Suede Jackets Periodically

Firstly, always read and follow the manufactures care instructions – they know best. Depending on how frequently you use your leather or suede jacket, every now and again remember to take it to a specialised dry cleaner. They have the necessary equipment, professional tools and conditioners required to keep the leather flexible and glowing all year around.

In the interim, if you live in a dry or humid area, source the appropriate conditioners and apply as necessary per instructions. If you live in wet areas, make sure you find suitable products designed for waterproofing and conditioning your leather or suedes. Doing this will extend the life of your leathers and suedes so that you can enjoy them for many more years to come.

Quick Tips:

  • Store your leather pants or jackets in the freezer overnight, it works! Wrap in a plastic bag first. It doesn’t kill any bacteria or remove any stains or odours but it does refresh them
  • Spot clean your leathers with a cotton white cloth
  • Never rub your leathers as it could cause colour fade
  • Test a small area of your jacket first with a conditioner or a waterproof cream or oil, before applying in full
  • If the leather is wet, let it dry our naturally or place a dry towel underneath to absorb the moisture
  • Avoid direct heat, sunlight, humidity, moisture where possible
  • Ensure airflow and ventilation is sufficient to avoid mould and mildew
  • Keep your garments in a 100% cotton Kazzi Kovers

Follow these simple tips and you’ll get the most out of your leather, suede and wool jackets and coat for many seasons to come. Enjoy!

Invest In A Quality Wooden Coat Hanger

Kazzi-Kovers-European-Beech-Wood-HangersYour garments should always be hung on a well-constructed quality wooden hanger. Kazzi Kovers offers beautifully crafted from FSC® Certified European Beech Wood, Coat Hangers which are incredibly durable, robust and stylish. They are purposed and designed to ensure that the shoulder and the arch of your heavier coats are fully supported, whilst maintaining their shape, structure and fabric integrity for the long term. (See Garment Bag and Coat Hanger Packages.)

Also, never store your garments on the wired coat hanger as it lacks support and can sometimes tarnish the garment if left in a humid area with little air flow for extended periods of time.
